Known locally as La Coupole and to some as the “flying saucer,” the Salle Omnisports was inaugurated for the 1975 Mediterranean Games. Today, this futuristic structure is used for sporting events, television recordings, and concerts. Given the devastating civil war in Algeria and the disastrous earthquake that struck Algiers in 2003, La Coupole has proven to be a remarkably resilient bastion of performance and play. While the players’ entrance shows signs of wear, its ovoid shape suggests a portal to a different, perhaps less mundane sphere.
